"The gaze falls on moving black and white images. A video in continuous loop. There is no question of sex in these recordings. They are certainly private." (Silke Hasselmann, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, 30.7.2022)
"The Lost Sex Tapes" is a collage of private MiniDV recordings from the estate of the artist Bert Neumann (1960-2015).
The video shows how closely Bert Neumann's private and professional lives were interwoven and how his life on the countryside in Western Pomerania shaped his groundbreaking art works from Berlin to New York and as far as Sao Paulo. Away from the stages and costumes, with which he advanced in just a few years as a duo with Frank Castorf to become the most important theatre artist since Bert Brecht, we see him exploring a region in search of a private country house, which will henceforth appear many times in his work.
Back in Berlin, Bert Neumann sings Iggy Pop's "I wanna be your dog" into a megaphone at a basement concert in 2005, and a contextual cohesion closes for a life balance between city and country, between high culture and punk and the advantages of a dog's life. The dog should of course also be a road trip enthusiast.
"Now we're gonna be face-to-face. And I'll lay right down in my favourite place. And now I wanna be your dog.
